A kuia &
her moko
What began as a simple wānanga with my moko soon became something much bigger than we ever imagined. Through shared kōrero, creativity, and a deep love for our culture, our journey into making poi was born. Since then, we’ve had the privilege of providing handcrafted poi to kura, kapa haka rōpū, whānau, and communities across Aotearoa and beyond.
As a whānau deeply connected to Te Ao Māori through my mokopuna and husband, kapa haka and community spaces have always been a meaningful part of our lives.
From attending events and markets to hosting and supporting poi wānanga, these experiences continue to shape who we are and why we do what we do.
The support we receive from our community is something we never take for granted. Every order, every message, every kura and rōpū that trusts us with their kaupapa is something we feel truly grateful and blessed for. Our mahi is more than creating poi — it’s about connection, culture, and carrying traditions forward for the next generation.
OUR DAY WITH
NZ BLACK FERNS
“Ko Uhia Mai — Let It Be Known”
We spent the day surrounded by young girls aspiring to one day become future Black Ferns, and what a privilege it was to witness. From the sidelines, we watched mentorship in action as the wāhine ran through drills, encouraged one another, and shared their knowledge so openly and generously. The atmosphere was uplifting from beginning to end.
One of the highlights of the day was seeing the BIGGEST poi ever created — “Poi Tautoko”, or “Pīki Poi” as Pere Wihongi lovingly calls it. Seeing everyone come together around something so powerful and uniquely ours was truly special.
After the drills, we had the chance to meet some of the Black Ferns players themselves. They were some of the most down-to-earth, welcoming and inspiring wāhine. So generous with their time, so encouraging with our tamariki, and such beautiful role models for our young Polynesian girls to look up to.
But more than anything, today reminded us of the importance of kaupapa and connection.
We sat amongst close to 100 people — all different ages, different backgrounds, different walks of life. One big melting pot brought together under the same kaupapa. Whether through sport, culture, te ao Māori, or simply community, everyone was united under one korowai.
The feeling in that space was immense.
There was aroha, pride, support, laughter, learning, and connection all woven throughout the day. Opportunities like this remind us how powerful culture can be in bringing people together.
We left feeling incredibly grateful — grateful for the people, the kōrero, the inspiration, and the chance to be part of something so meaningful.
